WHAT IS LENT?

Lent is a season of forty days, not counting Sundays, which begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday. Lent comes from an old English word referring to the lengthening of days such as those found in the early spring season. During the first three centuries of Christianity, Christians often prepared to celebrate Easter with short preparatory fasts of one, two, or more days. These early, pre-Easter fasts were used to mark the time between the death of Jesus and his resurrection, and to prepare one’s heart for Easter Sunday.

WHY WE PARTICIPATE IN LENT

Lent is an excellent opportunity for a spiritual and lifestyle reset.  It is a time of repentance, fasting and preparation for Resurrection Sunday / Easter. It is a time of self-examination and reflection. In the early church, Lent was a time to prepare new converts for baptism. Today, we focus on our continued growth in our relationship with God through Jesus Christ by taking time that would be spent on other things and re-consecrating our lives to the things which please God and bring us closer to Him.

OPTIONAL FASTING

If you choose to fast, you may determine which fast you will practice. No food consumed between 6AM to 4PM.  FBC’s corporate fast will take place on the Wednesdays of Lent.  Fasting options are left to the discretion of each member.
