WHAT IS LENT?

Lent is a season of forty days, not counting Sundays, which begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday. Lent comes from an old English word referring to the lengthening of days such as those found in the late winter/early spring season. During the first three centuries of the Christianity, Christians often prepared to celebrate Easter with short preparatory fasts of one, two, or more days. These early, pre-Easter fasts were used to mark the time between the death of Jesus and his resurrection, and to prepare one’s heart for Easter Sunday. The forty days represent the time Jesus spent in the wilderness, preparing to begin his ministry.
Lent is an excellent opportunity to for a spiritual and lifestyle reset. It is a time of repentance, fasting and preparation for the coming of Easter. It is a time of self-examination and reflection. In the early church, Lent was a time to prepare new converts for baptism. Today, Christians focus on our relationship with God, with fasting, consecration, sacrificial giving, Bible study, and prayer.
FASTING
Choice of fast is an individual matter.
Some choose to totally abstain from eating for 12 or 24 hours or for a greater period of time.
Others may choose to eat only certain foods; abstaining from sweets or sweetened beverages. Other options include choosing to consume water or electrolytes for a period of time. Fasting choices are left to the discretion and health conditions of each individual.
*Consult your physician before fasting if it will impact a medical condition or the taking of medication.
